Mano al Hermano has an opening for a Family Literacy Coordinator.
Hourly; 20-25 hours a week; Part-time with the possibility of progressing to Full-time; Flexible Schedule; Ability to work from home
Organization and Program Description: Mano al Hermano is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to support and empower Latino families in Dare County. Our largest program is our Family Literacy Program, which aims to improve a broad range of competencies related to literacy, such as basic language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening), communication within the family, parental understanding of child’s development and education, and relationships between parents and their children’s schools.
The core of the Family Literacy Program is our home-based tutoring initiative. Through this initiative, volunteer tutors visit students from kindergarten through middle school at least once a week to help them with homework and basic language skills. The initiative also includes an 8-week summer reading program. We currently have over 30 volunteer tutors, and over 80 students in our home-based tutoring program, with many more students on our waiting list.
Job Description: Under general supervision, the Family Literacy Coordinator performs professional work involved in planning, implementing, coordinating and evaluating the Family Literacy Program; assists in preparing budget and grant requests and reports for the Executive Director, Board of Directors, and funding sources; participates in planning and execution of fundraising initiatives and events; trains and supervises Family Literacy Program volunteers; and performs other related work as assigned.
The Family Literacy Coordinator reports to the Executive Director. The work involves administrative responsibilities as well as public relations, developing literacy and instructional materials, and maintaining contact with community, business, and related groups. The Coordinator will serve as a liaison between the Dare County school system and Mano al Hermano.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Recruit volunteer tutors, review their applications, and interview them
Receive and review student applications for the Family Literacy Program
Pair tutors with students, and accompany tutors to their first tutoring session
Conduct regular trainings for tutors
Compose and disseminate information to tutors, parents, and students as needed
Maintain weekly contact with tutors
Address tutors’, students’, and teachers’ concerns within the confines of the Family Literacy Program
Plan and coordinate Family Literacy events, such as, educational field trips
Conduct annual surveys of teachers, tutors, parents, and students
Perform volunteer tutor evaluations and address any concerns that arise
Represent the Family Literacy Program at school functions and community events
Assist with activities that help promote the purpose of the Family Literacy Program, and the mission of Mano al Hermano
Interest and experience in working with children, especially in the context of teaching English as a Second Language
College Degree, with preference for B.A. in Education-related field
Deep knowledge of reading, writing and literacy development
Experience working with diverse communities; familiarity with various Latino cultures
Ability to manage/coordinate a large group; ability to work well in a group as well as independently
Ability to think creatively
Strong organizational skills
Computer literate, with knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel and MS Outlook
Bilingual in English & Spanish preferred
